Looking after your Flokati Rug Looking after your Flokati Rug
Cleaning your rug is very simple.

Flokatis are highly resistant to dirt and stains. If your flokati is not very dirty, it can be shaken and brushed, as dirt and dust do not cling to flokati wool fibres.

If more dirty, first shake your flokati outdoors so that the dust comes off. Then hand-wash using the mildest of soaps designed for wool products in very small quantities, in cold or lukewarm water.

Please note that high water temperatures and chlorine bleach as well as dry cleaning must be avoided as they destroy the natural protective surface of the wool.

After letting continuously running water rinse the flokati for a short time, it must then be left out to dry on a line.

Because of the high built-in lanolin content, flokatis are highly resistant to dirt and stains and clean very easily.

When dry, the flokati can be brushed or left as is with its new, fresh fluffiness.

Washing a flokati rug properly does not damage the rug but merely enhances its uniquely inviting quality, appearance and touch.

Shedding

During the early life of your flokati, a small amount of fluff will shed, but this is not detrimental to its appearance and is common with all top-quality carpets. The long wool fibres used to create each flokati shed naturally. With brushing, washing and proper care, the shedding will stop. However, you should expect to see tufting from your flokati. Due to the long fibres, flokati rugs are not recommended if babies or toddlers are likely to crawl on the rug.

What are Flokati Rugs? What are Flokati Rugs?
From the 5th century, flokatis were created by the nomads from the mountains of Northern Greece. Flokatis were, and still are, an essential part of every bridal dowry, conventional Greek home furnishing and family heirloom. Flokatis are practical. They keep the house very warm through the cold winter months and are sometimes referred to as "shepherds' rugs".

The Greek word "flokos" means pile, namely the thickness from each fluffy woolen yarn that it is comprised of. The softness of this yarn is achieved by a very demanding finishing process. Before the weaving process of the flokati can begin, each single yarn is thoroughly cleaned and spun so as to assure the proper result. Then, reels of these pure woolen yarns are wound onto warp beams, which are then tied onto the looms.

After the meticulous weaving process of these pre-cut shag strand yarns and the interweaving or felting process, they are then carefully and repetitively placed in vats under the spinning currents of natural waterfalls for up to 18 hours. It is precisely at this stage that the flokati acquires its fluffy consistency and quality that lasts up to thirty years.
